Oncology Massage

In 2023, I made the very difficult decision to put my work and business on hold after being diagnosed with HER2+ breast cancer.

I felt that while going through treatment, surgeries, and recovery, it would be unfair to my clients and myself to continue working during that time.

So, in the true spirit of Bodyworks, I’ve had to learn how to live in a body that’s different and adapt to a new way of living life so my body works for me.  I needed time to heal, to grieve, to learn and to grow.

Massage Therapy

During this period, I found that Harrogate doesn't have enough therapists in oncology care.  The few that we have are vastly overbooked due to the amount of individuals seeking their care.  In this struggle, I came to the realization that I could use my misfortune to benefit others.

I have unique insight to how cancer and the different forms of therapy used to rid the body of disease can ravage a person, alter the way they look and feel about themselves and the short amount of time these changes happen in can be inconceivable.

There is also the frustrations that come with feeling like no one understands how the new pains affect you and the anxiety and fear they cause.  What’s worse, is when you feel that they don’t take you seriously.  This brings its own set of fears and anxiety.

During chemotherapy, I developed phlebitis in both arms from the infusions and the slightest touch was excruciating - even clothing became painful.

I truly understand how swiftly and drastically pain tolerances can shift.

This summer, I am taking the first of many classes in oncolgy care for massage therapists at The Christie School of Oncology on Manchester. I will be focusing my educational efforts on the broad spectrum of needs that those living with and beyond cancer have. In addition, I will also be providing palliative care massage and working to incorporate in-home massage for those who find it too burdensome to leave their homes or hospital rooms for treatment.

I looking forward to expanding my knowledge and growing in my field. Most importantly, I look forward to the opportunity to use my personal experiences and the knowlegde I gain to help you feel the best you can in the body you have.
