Oncology Massage

My Cancer Story

In 2023, I made the very difficult decision to put my work and business on hold after being diagnosed with HER2+ breast cancer.

I felt that while going through treatment, surgeries, and recovery, it would be unfair to my clients and myself to continue working during that time.

So, in the true spirit of Bodyworks, I’ve had to learn how to live in a body that’s different and adapt to a new way of living life so my body works for me.  I needed time to heal, to grieve, to learn and to grow.

Massage Therapy

During this period, I found that Harrogate doesn't have enough therapists in oncology care.  The few that we have are vastly overbooked due to the amount of individuals seeking their care.  In this struggle, I came to the realization that I could use my misfortune to benefit others.

I have unique insight to how cancer and the different forms of therapy used to rid the body of disease can ravage a person, alter the way they look and feel about themselves and the short amount of time these changes happen in can be inconceivable.

There is also the frustrations that come with feeling like no one understands how the new pains affect you and the anxiety and fear they cause.  What’s worse, is when you feel that they don’t take you seriously.  This brings its own set of fears and anxiety.

During chemotherapy, I developed phlebitis in both arms from the infusions and the slightest touch was excruciating - even clothing became painful.   I truly understand how swiftly and drastically pain tolerances can shift.

So lets have a look a the benefits of Oncology Massage, and how it can help!

What is Oncology Massage?

Oncology Massage is a tailored form of massage therapy designed specifically for the unique needs of individuals living with cancer. Unlike traditional massage, it involves gentle, mindful techniques and customized adjustments to ensure safety and comfort, taking into account the client’s medical history, treatment plan, and overall health.

Massage therapists trained in Oncology Massage understand the complexities of cancer treatment, including the potential effects of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. They are skilled in creating sessions that prioritize safety while delivering much-needed relief.

Key Benefits of Oncology Massage

Pain and Symptom Management

Cancer treatments often lead to physical discomfort, including muscle aches, joint pain, and tissue tightness. Oncology Massage uses gentle techniques to ease these discomforts, providing relief without adding pressure or strain to sensitive areas.

Alleviation of Stress and Anxiety

A cancer diagnosis and its treatment can be emotionally taxing. Oncology Massage helps reduce the body’s stress response by calming the nervous system, leading to a sense of peace and relaxation. The therapeutic touch can also foster a positive mind-body connection, helping clients regain a sense of control over their bodies.

Enhanced Sleep Quality

Sleep disturbances are common during cancer treatment, often due to pain or emotional stress. Oncology Massage helps promote better rest by reducing tension and activating the body’s natural relaxation response.

Reduction of Nausea and Fatigue

Many cancer patients experience nausea and chronic fatigue as side effects of treatment. By stimulating circulation and encouraging lymphatic flow, Oncology Massage may help reduce these symptoms, leaving clients feeling more balanced and energized.

Improved Lymphatic Function and Circulation

Gentle massage strokes can aid in reducing fluid retention and swelling, particularly for those who have undergone lymph node removal or are dealing with lymphedema. Improved circulation also helps the body eliminate toxins and promote healing.

Emotional and Psychological Support

Beyond the physical benefits, Oncology Massage offers a safe and supportive space for clients to be nurtured and cared for. The healing power of compassionate touch can help boost mood and provide comfort during difficult times.

A Personalized Approach for Every Client

No two cancer journeys are the same, and neither are Oncology Massage sessions. I work closely with clients to understand their specific health concerns, treatment stages, and comfort levels. Whether it’s avoiding areas affected by recent surgeries or tailoring pressure levels based on bone density changes, each session is carefully customized to meet individual needs.
